The Kuantan High Court will be seeing a familiar face soon - Judicial Commissioner Yang Arif Dato' Marianna binti Hj Yahaya will be sitting in the Kuantan High Court from 1 October 2008. Yang Arif is presently sitting in the High Court in Shah Alam.

Sessions Court Judge, Tuan Azuar bin Che Yusof has been transferred from Sessions Court Kuantan to Temerloh and cases in the Sessions Court Temerloh will now be proceed as usual except on Thursdays.

All members are reminded that cases in the High Court fixed before Judge Yang Arif Dato' Abdul Halim bin Aman from 18 to 24 September 2008 will be postponed to a date to be informed by the Court.

An extraordinary general meeting of the Malaysian Bar will be held at 10.00 a.m. next Saturday, September 20 at Wisma MCA (Dewan Lee San Choon, Level 2) to discuss the violation of the rule of law in the light of the arrests of Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng and Seputeh MP YB Teresa Kok under the Internal Security Act  and the issuance of show-cause letters to the three newspapers, Sin Chew Daily, The Sun and Suara Keadilan. All members are urged to attend this EGM.

The Bar Council Secretariat will no longer be distributing hard copies of the Sijil Annual Application Form. The Forms can be obtained by downloading from the Malaysian Bar website the URL http://www.malaysianbar.org.my/sijil_annual.html or by collecting a hard copy of the same from the Pahang Bar Secretariat subject to photocopying charges. Submission of the Sijil Annual Application Form 2009 to the Bar Council 2009 should be done by 15 October 2008.

IRB has officially informed the Bar Council vide its letter dated 21 July 2008 that it maintains its position that the basis of income recognition for legal firms is the accruals basis - and this will take effect from the Year of Assessment (YA) 2008. Details have been disseminated to members by way of e-circular (see BC Circular 226/2008 dated 3 September 2008).
