The Bar Council has called for an EGM following the arrest of 5 members of the KL Legal Aid Centre in their capacity as advocates & solicitors when trying to gain access to earlier arrested persons in connection with a candlelight vigil. This EGM is important as an arrested person's right to counsel and the fundamental rights of advocates & solicitors to discharge their responsibilities to their clients is now at stake. The Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia has allowed members who wish to attend the EGM to request for adjournment of their cases fixed on 15 May 2009 through their respective Courts. Date: 15 May 2009 Time: 3.00 p.m. Venue: Dewan Sivik, Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya, Jalan Yong Shook Lin, 46675 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

All members are to take note that Y. A. Dato' V T Singham as Managing Judge,High Court (1) Kuantan has directed that all Supplemental Affidavits for foreclosure cases must be filed 5 days before the hearing of the matter. Cases in which the Affidavits are filed less than period directed will NOT be called on the hearing date and a new date will be assigned by the Registrar to be endorsed on the Notice of Appointment OR on a newly filed Notice of Appointment.

Members are to take note that commencing 1 May 2009, the Sessions Court in Kuantan has re-assigned the cases as follows:-

1. Cases registered under Codes 63 & 64 will only be heard in the Sessions Court 5 & 6

2. Cases registered under Codes 61 & 62 in the year 2009 will be re-assigned according to consecutive registration numbers.

Following the Pahang Bar Committee's dialogue session with Y.A Tuan Akhtar b Tahir, Judicial Commissioner of the Temerloh High Court, it was decided that all lawyers must be present in Court between 8.30 - 9.00 a.m. to record their presence and to inform the interpreters in to stand down the matter in case they are engaged in other courts; for criminal cases, lawyers must be ready with their submissions immediately or on the next day after the end of prosecution case/full trial; the cause list will be put up on the High Court notice board 1 day before the matters are heard and members who are registered with the Pahang Bar Googlegroups will receive this cause list directly from the High Court. The Bar Committee will be having a dialogue session with YA Dato' V T Singham at High Court 1, Kuantan on 22 April 2009 (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. Members who wish to forward their opinions or matters to be brought up with His Lordship or wish to attend this dialogue, please provide your names to the Honorary Secretary, Larry Yeoh or the Pahang Bar Chairman, Sarengapani Rajoo by 15 April 2009.

At the meeting on 9/2/2009 between YA Dato' VT Singham, Senior High Court Judge in Kuantan, and the Pahang Bar Committee, it was agreed that all documents to be filed in court will be accompanied by the firm's cover letter and all documents will bear the date of the hearing/mention/trial on the top right hand corner in red ink. All members are reminded to comply with this directive.
